Antonin Dvořák | Born September 8, 1841. Died May 1, 1904. | Born at Mühlhausen (Bohemia), Dvořák was, at | first, considered to represent a new National | School of composition; but his influence on music has | proven far wider. He was the greatest of the pupils of | the Bohemian composer, Smetana (1824-1884). The | son of a butcher, he was taught by the village school- | master. After additional studies at Zlonitz and Prague, | he won a Government pension, gaining the interest of | Brahms and of the critic, Hanslick. He was a hard | student. Being asked what teacher helped him most, | he replied: "I studied with God, the birds, the trees, | the rivers." Unquestionably, his music has a strong | natural appeal. |
Prior to his coming to New York in 1892, Dvořák | had composed four Symphonies; but his Fifth, "From | the New World," evidences his strong interest in things | American. While in this country, he wrote also some | very fine chamber music; furthermore, he taught and | influenced strongly many budding American writers. |
Among his popular earlier works is the volume of | Slavic Dances, written originally for four hands at the | request of the publisher, Simrock. His Stabat Mater | is one of the finest settings of the grand old hymn, and | his Mass in D minor is noteworthy. An original thinker, | he excelled in all forms. |
