Charles Gounod. | Born June 17, 1818. Died October 17, 1893. | Born in Paris. His father was a painter, and his | mother a distinguished pianist who gave him | his first instruction. As a boy he showed a wonderful | ear for pitch, was passionately fond of music, and was | punished in school because he composed instead of | learning lessons. Later he was allowed to study | music and entered the Paris Conservatoire. |
In 1839 he took first prize for composition for a | cantata. He was very devout and so strongly | attracted to the church music of Palestrina and to | theology that he made up his mind to enter the | priesthood. The works of Mendelssohn and Schu- | mann renewed his enthusiasm for music. |
His first appearance as a composer was in London, | with a mass. He then took up opera composition. | In 1859 he brought out Faust, one of the most popular | operas ever written. He died in Paris while playing | his last work a "Requiem," to some friends. |
He had a great gift for melody. He also wrote much church music, oratorios and many sacred songs. |
From "Roméo et Juliette."
