Carl Maria von Weber | Born December 18, 1786. Died June 5, 1826. | "The Lord Byron of Music." Born in | Eutin, near Vienna. His musical pedigree | shows musical ancestry for five generations. His | father was a fine amateur player on violin, viola | and double bass; his mother a singer. The boy was | born lame and delicate in body. His father who | was ambitious, made him work hard at music, | painting and engraving. At ten years of age he | received the first regular instruction in music, and | showed great skill in playing and composition. He | also learned to engrave music on stone. |
As a young man he led a wandering life, until | in 1813 he settled at Prague to direct opera. in | 1916 he became orchestral director at Dresden, | which position he held until his death in London. | In 1817 he married Caroline Brandt, famous opera | singer. He is buried at Dresden. |
His genius and kind disposition made him popu- | lar in society. Like Mendelssohn he had varied | talents, as pianist, composer, conductor and writer | on musical topics. He wrote the first truly Ger- | man operas: "Der Freischutz," "Euryanthe," and | "Oberon." Other works are piano pieces, Concert- | Stück, Sonatas, Rondo in E flat, and "Invitation | to the Dance."
