S. rattans or sugar canes must be planted | every other year, the average growing season being about six | months; the cane yields about 21 tons per acre. It was in- | troduced into America in 1775, when eight slaves, skilled in | its cultivation, were sent with it from Port au Prince, Hayti, | to the Jensuit Father, who planted it in the soil of what is | now the First District of the City of New Orleans, La.
